We assisted this article when we had a problem with one of our ESX servers, the symptom was that the server was very slow, and all of our daily actions such as powering a virtual machine on/off, taking a snapshot/ reverting to a snapshot were taking more than 20 minutes – extremely slow. We tried to restart the management service and the vpxa many times. and nothing had worked.

Eventually the server¬†appeared as¬†disconnected in the vCenter server and did not respond to ping. (request timed out), we went to the server localy and we saw a purple screen with the error:¬†“lost heartbeat”.

We have found the following VMware KB:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1009525

But the salvation came from restarting the Pegasus deamon, as describe in the following VMware KB: Pegasus Memory Leaks:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1009607

Idit.
